Welsh Cakes

I feel Welsh Cakes are a very underrated sweet treat. They are so easy to make and so tasty everyone should be making them! If you haven’t made them before you might not know you actually cook them on the hob so it’s even quicker then you can imagen. So give them a go, you will love them.

Prep Time: 10 – 15 Mins

Cook Time: 3 Mins for Each side of the Welsh Cake

Portions:15 Welsh cakes

Ingredients

  • 225g Plain Flour
  • 1/2 TSP Backing Powder
  • 85g Caster Sugar
  • 100g Butter (Plus extract to grease your pan with)
  • 100g Raisins
  • 1 Egg
  • Milk

Equipment you will need

  • 1 Large Bowl
  • Frying Pan
  • Rolling Pin
  • Biscuit Cutter

Method

  1. First you need to get your large bowl and add your flour, Baking Powder, Sugar and Raisins and mix together
  2. Now take your Butter and rub it into your flour mix with your finger tips until it starts to form bread crumbs (like you would with a crumble topping)
  3. Now you can add your egg and a splash of milk and start to form a dough
  4. Before you roll and cut your dough you need to preheat your pan on a medium heat ready to cook your Welsh Cakes
  5. Now tip your dough onto a lightly floured clean work top and roll out to about the thickness of your finger and cut until you have no dough left (this will be about 15 cakes depending on the thickness of your dough)
  6. Now you can cook your Welsh Cakes so add a little butter or oil in your pan and cook your Welsh Cakes on medium heat for about 3 mins on each side until they become golden brown. I would do a maximum of 4 in the pan to avoid bringing the temperature down
  7. Once they are cooked you can sprinkle with sugar and enjoy

My Top Tips

  • Don’t worry if you haven’t got a cutter you can always use a glass so no stress
  • Why not experiment with flavours and add some chocolate chips, after all chocolate makes everything better right
  • Don’t try to speed the cooking process up by putting the heat up as they will burn on the outside and be raw in the middle, no one wants that
  • Probably not a good idea to let your cat get so close to your Welsh Cakes 🙂
